My daughter was born on 19th March 1998 in WellingtonHospital, New Zealand.Unfortunately when she arrived she was diagnosed ashaving VATER Syndrome. Up until the time of the birthmy wife Katrina had all possible tests to check for defects at King College, London, all of whichcame back negative. As you can imagine when my daughter was diagnosedas having VATER Syndrome on her arrival we wereboth confused and shocked. Up until this point wehad no knowledge of such a Syndrome and could notunderstand why this had not been picked up with allthe tests.Kirstie was born one month prematurely with what isknown as an imperforate anus, a hole in the heart, butterfly ribs, a twist in her spine and .....She had an operation 2 days after being born tojoin the aspohagus and the stomach and to attacha cholostamy bag.The bag she will have to keep onuntil she is 3 years old before they can carryout constructive surgery and create an anus.
